You would be welcome in my church, Charlotte. We believe in and love everyone who comes to our door. It is a small denomination founded in 1457 by the followers of Jan Hus, a Catholic priest who taught that the Mass and the Bible should be in the vernacular, and was burned at the stake for heresy. He preached at Bethlehem Chapel in Prague.

The Moravian Church founded the cities of Bethlehem, PA and Winston-Salem, NC. It was originally called the Unitas Fratrum, or Unity of the Brethren. I have been attending the church in NJ for most of my 85 years.

Your faith, which comes through your words in every piece you write, is simple and powerful, just like that of Stephen Colbert.

Charlotte,

I really appreciate what you stand for and that you wrote this. Part of this hits because of a MAGA retiree in my chapel congregation trying to get me tried by Court Martial over things I did not say in a July 2018 sermon. His lies were grotesque. I had to go through a painful investigation which cleared me of everything, and I put in my retirement paperwork. The congregation turned on me, few of my fellow chaplains stood beside me, and the Chief of Chaplains Office knew about it and did nothing.

Stephen Colbert is a Christian who practices his faith and tells the truth unlike the MAGA Christians and Christian Nationalists.

I see Colbert’s experience through the lens of my experience. The mob is coming for everyone, and CBS has folded to increase its bottom line. This was done solely to please Trump, just like 60 Minutes.

Thank you again. Steve Dundas

This Colbert fan had no idea what his religious affiliation was. All I know is that he's funny and he's smart and the things that piss him off are pretty much the things that piss me off.

Charlotte - None of us can (or are intended to) match the example of Jesus of Nazareth but that doesn't mean we cannot follow and emulate Him.

You already have achieved and are achieving "something on par with what Mr. Colbert embodies" with your witness and your writing. That's why we're here with you...

This goes good with coffee. Thank you for the link to the Dua Lipa convo about faith and comedy. Colbert blows my mind with his intellectual and emotional depth often. There has certainly been sadness in the last week with Trump and the GOP taking back CPB/NPR money and this Trump half-Nelson of the most popular night show because TRUTH. Thank you for your writing, very happy to be a subscriber, Charlotte.

I love Colbert's quote from 2010 on how many right-wing Christians in America proclaim their love for Christ yet ignore His commands that we live our lives in service of people who are impoverished. I can't believe it's been 15 years since he said that, because it feels so timely today and is evergreen.

Right-wingers love to twist Christ's words and define being poor as "moral poverty" and that their two missions are to save America from the gaps and the feminist harlots who keep advocating for abortion--or else they insist that serving the poor must be voluntary charity and not being "forced" by the government to support people in poverty with their tax dollars. They miss the part of the Gospel where Jesus _commands_ us to serve the poor--we don't just donate money to charities or give to food banks only if we feel like it; it's something we should do every day, even when we don't "feel like it."

A truly Christian government--as many right-wingers purport to want--would provide quality food, housing, healthcare, and education for every single person in our country so there would BE no poverty in America. And we certainly wouldn't be cutting aid to USAID or burning food staples by the thousands of tons, either.

Colbert was and will always be right on this, and it's a shame so many self-purported "Christians" hate him for it.

Have you listened to Colbert’s recent interview with Fr. James Martin on Martin’s podcast, “The Spiritual Life”? It is excellent.
