Delicious indeed. Actual governance would be tastier, but for now, this is tasty enough given the circumstances if it leads to more functional tastiness in the future.

Delicious indeed. McCarthy continues to lose even with tfg’s blessing. May they continue imploding & devouring each other. & may America vote them all gone asap. Thank you, once again, Charlotte! HaPpY, hApPy 2023.

I have a question... who, exactly is holding the GOP hostage? The MAGAs or the Never-McCarthyites? It's all so confusing.

Great summary - the last year has certainly taught me a lot about the mechanics of our government. What a Rube Goldberg system we have! I second Elizabeth Kent - "decline to vote" only helps McCarthy if a Dem does it, in this instance.

"It’s been offered that some Republicans may vote “present” or decline to vote in order to make a statement on McCarthy, while lowering the threshold for their colleagues."'

I hadn't thought of this. The Chaos Caucus has the easy way out but won't take it. Anyone who still thinks the GOP is interesting in governing (rather than ruling) is not paying attention at all.

Ha - the problem for Republicans is that the leading vote getter has been Jeffries. If Republicans vote present/decline to vote, they would make it easier for Jeffries to become Speaker - not McCarthy.

Maybe I misunderstand it, but it's the majority of the voting members, not total members, so if a member decided to vote "present" or not be in the chamber, their vote wouldn't count in the total. That's one reason the Dems are ALL still there; if any leave, that'll take a vote away from Jeffries and will lower the total threshold. Either way, this popcorn is delicious.

Correct. Which is why, should 10 Republicans choose to vote "present" or decline to vote, the solid 212 Jeffries is getting would be enough for a plurality and make him Speaker. Republicans voting "present" or declining to vote does not help McCarthy at all.

Ooop - my error - a plurality would require a rule change, which is highly unlikely to happen, so 11 Republicans would have to remove themselves so 212 would be a majority of the remaining votes for Jeffries to become Speaker.

Thank you Charlotte. I didn't know how this worked. I appreciate everything you do.
