No wonder Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted out.

Maybe Harry will turn up…?

Maybe… But it's not his responsibility. It's William's. If H&M were still working Royals, they would've been dispatched to Australia for an appearance… Or maybe not. It's women's sports after all, surely not worth a Royal plane ride to Oz and back (that was sarcasm font - and a little snark).

Oh, I know. But he could have gone as a "private citizen" just to cock a snook at them... would have been delicious...

Agree 💯 This is a blunder comparable to HMQ staying at Balmoral while her nation piled up flowers for Diana. A complete misreading of where the people are at. Heck, they could have sent George to go watch the game live…

Yes! And that last point: that *the boys*watch too! I am happy to report that my son & husband are watching & my French brother in law too (who is rooting for Spain. Euro solidarity I guess). Me? I don’t so much like the football … but now having read this I’m gonna go inside and see who wins. Great essay. Thank you

Hi Charlotte. I read one of your articles a few months ago, and I liked it enough that I wanted to send you a "tip", but not subscribe monthly to your newsletter, so I bought myself a one-month gift subscription. Since then I've found myself consistently reading and enjoying your posts and I've now converted to a full fledged annual member. Thank you so much for your simple, straightforward, yet thought-provoking posts!

Good for you. The British Royals come over as a group of too rich, spoiled brats. They have enormous privilege, huge fortunes, and incredible castles, paid for by the British public. Attending the women's football finals is part of their job, what they do to deserve all those advantages. And who knows, their presence may have given the Lionesses the extra bit that could have seen them win.

As an American I do not really care about this issue. If I were British, however, I would be wondering why the country needs a royal family at all.
