While I am a CT voter, my heart will hold space for NYC, where I spent much of my adult life. Last night, as returns were coming in, I felt downright "giddy" (not a word I usually use publicly). No one should feel "entitled" to be in public service. Nor should anyone have to pay their dues. Or wait their turn. What I saw was emotion in a way that I've not seen in a long time. And emotion for someone, and not against someone. We need elected leaders who serve all of us and not to a few elite. (And yes, we would have also been well served by Adrienne Adams...her message -- and record -- is outstanding).
Love your always incisive and insightful commentary! I don't live in NY but was uplifted to see Cuomo almost assuredly defeated. And I and so many others share the disillusionment and rejection of the "stubborn refusal of the Democratic Party to evolve beyond the stale political strategies of the past" as you eloquently put it. I hope Mamdani wins the general, and also wish Adrienne Adams had received the attention and support she deserved.
I read that in the presidential election, the least informed voters voted for Trump. We have to help voters be informed, and we have to help them find that interesting and important
Thank you for this excellent article. I love your writing.
Being from the mid-west, I appreciate your research and consider you a trusted source for elections such as this. I look forward to your insightful viewpoint. Cuomo lacks character. The most important element of any leader is character! The size of Mamdani's door to door campaign is amazing and inspiring. His victory in this round was well deserved.
As a lifetime NYer, I agreed with your friend. In part because I swear the older voters (older than me) were confusing him with his father, I heard people calling him Mario.
We still have a fight ahead of us, but I was very glad to be wrong this time
Thanks, Charlotte, for your explanation. As a Montanan, & with everything imploding & exploding on a minute by minute basis, the NYC race wasn’t my highest priority. I so appreciate your articulate & concise writing. I’m super jacked for Mamdani & all other younger & fresh people to take over. It’s waaaay past time. I’m 73 & so sick of this shit.
I live about 45 minutes outside NYC which means we get their TV stations and thus their ads. The ads that those opposing Mamdani ran were appalling. Old pictures, old headlines, purposely misleading quotes. Those alone would have been enough to get me to rank him. I definitely was an “ABC” (anyone but Cuomo) and was disgusted by the support from Bloomberg, Clinton, Torres, Clyburn and the good as support from Gillibrand. Her non-endorsement endorsement just cost her my vote next time she runs. Supposedly stands up for women’s rights but doesn’t condemn the serial sexual abuser. Dead to me.
I loved the dynamic between Mamdani and Lander and the word is that if Mamdani wins in November Lander is in line for a powerful deputy mayor position which would be a good thing. I liked Adams too and she would make a good mayor I think. My choices in order would have been Lander, Adams, Mamdani.

495 Days 16 Minutes & 7 Seconds until the mid terms. We gotta lot of work to do.
Tick Tock, mofos.
And we have a map of how to do it. Person to person, door to door, with good candidates.

Hopeful that the smug Dem centrists got the message. They really have no respect for voters.
Sadly the extremely competent female candidate was overlooked.
Often, I read younger voters feel so much dislike for candidates, they sit elections out.
I’m well aware NYC isn’t everywhere, but perhaps the lesson should be, if you vote you win?

You’re the best.
Honestly, I don't live in NY, but I am thrilled to see this. Democrats need fresh blood and Mamdani ran a good race.
Spot on as ever!
