I had a Barbie doll which was the only doll my four brothers were not allowed to destroy because it was expensive (I'm 71). I didn't buy my daughter one because I really hated the doll; no one honestly looked like Barbie and I hated the image. I finally gave in and bought her one and then realized that it was the "stuff" she liked, clothes, Dream House, kitchen, etc. much more than the doll. I've never been one for pink or purple but my daughter had a long pink and purple phase. I've slowly changed my attitude towards Barbie over the years, and I am looking forward to seeing the movie thanks to your review and the fact that it's Greta Gerwig.
Thanks for this, Charlotte! A Barbie movie? Not for this serious film consumer. That's certainly not worth my attention, right? I'm looking forward to seeing it after reading your cogent review.
I've heard something about that other movie, too. Meh.
I always enjoy your writing. Keep doing good work!
Appreciate your thoughtful review of Barbie (both the movie and the 60+ y.o. cultural phenomenon) -- but wait! You mentioned Oppenheimer and then somehow failed to include Wes Anderson’s new release in your short list of blockbuster summer movies.
I’ve been holding my breath for many weeks in anticipation of Asteroid City, which (I’m guessing) will make a far more entertaining statement on the human condition than the other two put together. Happy to be able to enjoy movies in theaters again!

This was fun and interesting. I think the right description for the seagoing Ken would be a merKen, since the “mer” prefix means “sea.”
David, I think you're right!

Well, now I can’t wait to see it!
I’m going Saturday too, I’m so excited! And glad to have the Charlotte stamp of approval.
Delighted
Fabulous review. Your writing is always top notch and this review is no different. I can't wait to see it. 💜💚💛
