Yessssss!! The Mariners are our team (clearly winning is not the only thing, heh). How joyfully you captured the perfection of watching a game in person. ❤️
Thank you for this lovely piece. I love my summer family at the ball park. I was at that game, too, but couldn't see the "fight" because the bro fans in front of me stood and blocked the view. Anyway, the Mets fans among them were actually funny guys. So the game ended up suckling but was still a great time.
When I became a fan as a young adult, I would go to the ballpark (SF and Oakland on alternating weekends--lucky me with 2 teams within reach!), buy a single ticket, and talk to strangers about baseball. I ended up making good friends in both parks--would buy my ticket in section 126 in Oakland down the 3rd base line to hang with some longtime season ticketholders. Back then they didn't sell day of game tickets beyond section 125 because attendance was so low, but the ticket window lady was cool. My life got busier to I had to stick with SF where I live, and I do love my Giants and have had season tickets since the early 80's. Thanks for a great column! ❤️⚾️
Charlotte—First, bobblehead envy. Then, ticket envy. Finally, wordsmith envy.
A really good read. Thanks for bringing us along.
I wish my tiny Cape Cod town could hear you speak. It really needs to hear your words and soak up the humanity.
Signed,
An admirer in the cheap seats. ⚾️
