[This morning, I spoke at the ADL’s Together Against Hatred Rally on Capitol Hill, alongside some amazing folks who are committed to fighting antisemitism and all other forms of hatred, specifically calling on Congress to fully fund the Nonprofit Security Grant Program to protect synagogues, schools, and other public spaces.
Our little town in Iowa City is blessed to have Rabbi Esther Hugenholtz. She shows up at rallies for trans 🏳️⚧️ youth. She shows up at rallies for abortion rights. She shows up at Black Lived Matter rallies. She says so beautifully her faith compels her to speak up for marginalized communities because we belong to each other. Thank you Charlotte for standing up for Rabbi Esther and all our Jewish family and friends.
Bless you Charlotte. My father was a survivor, but my grandparents were horrifically murdered during the Holocaust. It means so much to have you stand with us, and we stand with you.
So well said. We all need to stand up to antisemitism and all instances of hatred. It's too easy to look the other way and keep our heads down. I grew up in a neighborhood in St. Louis that was Jewish and Catholic. We were Catholic (I no longer associate with the Catholic Church) and a rabbi lived next door to us. I had never met anyone of another faith until I moved to Texas and met Protestants and Baptists. Years later, my daughter went to pre-school at a large Jewish Community Center that was across the street from where I worked. I learned about Kosher food (what not to send for her lunch), and we both learned about Jewish holidays and traditions, and attended activities related to those holidays. It was such a fantastic experience for us both. I will never understand such hatred but I know it exists.
I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate what you write. From Ted Lasso to antisemitism—it’s always wonderful. Today’s piece really was great. Thank you so much. I’m so glad I subscribe.
I admire your courage, your commitment to justice and right, and your determination to fight alongside those who are marginalized and threatened. If only we could all find that within ourselves, how much better could our world be? <3
"...all of us, every single one of us, are imperfect and none of us know everything and the greatest collective strength we have as humanity is the opportunity to learn from each other."
Once again, dear Charlotte, your compassion & truth filled words etch themselves into my heart. Thank you. I just renewed my subscription as a birthday gift to myself.
It’s not important to know everything. It’s important to care and want to do better. 💙 Thank you Charlotte.
