I love this and I dare say, President Carter would love this. (not the part about the regular folk waiting outside in the cold) -- but the message you share, which is to highlight them.

I was fortunate - I was so Blessed to work with President Carter on many Habitat builds -- it is and will always be, among the greatest honors of my life to have spent the kind of time with him (and Ms Rosalynn, and their family) that I have. He was -- all that one imagines or dares to hope β€” that he will be -- and more.

And the world will be poorer without him in it.

It was precisely because that "glimmer of hope" was so faint that I sat at my desk crying during the state funeral service. That we have so few people in high public office now to whom I can point and say "That person is a good human being, a decent soul with a good heart." So very, very few.

I am desperately hoping that fundamentally good people like Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris stay in politics, and go on to challenge the current overlords. I would hope that people like David Hogg, who is running to head the DNC, stay in politics and continue to bring the fire to those who would co-opt our national values. I hope that more young people become engaged in the political process and can steer our country back to its basic premise: of the people, by the people, for the people!

Thank you, Charlotte. I'm in tears and sad that I'm on the west coast and couldn't be there. And remembering the time in high school, on my mock convention team representing Georgia, and shaking Jimmy Carter's hand on that convention stage. I was a few weeks shy of being old enough to vote for him. But I got to shake his hand.

Thank you for this wonderful tribute to President Carter and to all of those people who waited in line to pay their respects to him. He was a man of such wonderful character and integrity who was often unappreciated. Your words brought tears to my eyes and hope to my heart.

I love this perspective because it’s truly what we need to see more of and recognize!

(Today Fresh Air had clips from several interviews Terry Gross did with President Carter over many years. It was great to hear his voice and thoughts again.)

Thank you. For those of us who couldn’t be there in person to pay our respects, that was a deeply moving way to be present. We lost a good man. A gentle man. And a leader we can hope to be. ❀️

Thank you! This brought tears to my eyes. I think President Carter was such a kind, empathetic, and giving man. His name should always be revered. Growing up Catholic, he embodied all the virtues of what we learned about the numerous saints. He’ll be one to me, St. Jimmy.

Thank you Charlotte- for sharing this uplifting piece about the many fellow Americans who recognized and honored the exceptional man who earned my first vote for President, Jimmy Carter. I admired him and Rosalyn so much, for their kindness, their integrity, and their commitment to being a light in this world.

Thank you for the view from the line in below twenty degree weather.

I wonder if we will ever see a real Christian like Jimmy Carter elected again. He was a rarity.

Evangelists and Catholics lost their souls when they tossed Carter away over his insistence on the separation of church and state, his refusal to have the average taxpayer pay for their private schools, or go after abortion.

This was a large part of the reason that Carter never got a chance to serve the 2nd term, the abandonment by so-called Christians. Along with the hostage crisis which recently was revealed as extended by Reagan's men flying to Iran to cut a deal with the mullahs to hold off on releasing the hostages, until after the election (for a nice fat payoff, of course).

Charlotte, this is a gem. I always enjoy your writing but this one made me cry. You are right. This can be the glimmer of hope we (I) need.
