As always your insight shines! My husband has a doctorate in physical therapy. One of the hardest courses he took for his undergrad degree was an elective, "History of the American West in Film". It was taught by the Dean of Arts and Sciences. The students had to analyze how Caucasian people and American Indian people were portrayed in film. They discussed how the cultures were represented and contrasted to the reality in history. Very relevant since we live in a state with 9 Indian reservations. In my undergraduate degree I took a semester of Lakota. It was difficult! In my masters degree program I took a class about the culture of poverty. It enlightened us as to why people living in poverty have different decision making components to consider than middle class people do. Electives are broad in scope and valuable. They stretch our thinking! I too would live to take the course on Kendrick Lamar's lyrics.
There is a reason Republicans want to control universities (I purposely used Republicans because the entire party is maga now). It is precisely these types of courses which open minds and reward curiosity. Republicans must shut them down to control the country.
Excellent essay and I agree completely with your conclusion. I would like to add that there are some people (a lot of MAGA) who simply want to complain, maybe because it gets them attention. How many of us work with people, have relatives and friends who constantly complain. Most of time, the complaint isn't logical, it's simply ranting. Everyone complains about different things at different times, but these MAGA are never ending complainers. When my daughter was growing up I had what I called the 5 minute rule. She could complain about anything, using any language for 5 minutes and I wouldn't interrupt. I believe in the Shrek approach of better out than in. But, at the end of the 5 minutes she either had to propose a solution, or stop complaining. She developed speaking skills and I got to understand what was bothering her.

Some people don't understand that learning things is not only fun, but enlarges your world and your critical thinking skills.
