Whew! I’m choked up, tired, have been feeling rudderless since the election, but I cannot, will not, fade away in defeat! Thank you, Charlotte, for your passion and eloquence! For reminding us that we have to stay engaged! For the vulnerable among us, those who need us, those we love, and for those we may not agree with. I’m retired with a boatload of ailments and my main gigs these days revolve around being a Westie(s) Mom and Grammy to my growing number of grandkids! Those are the top entries on my long resume, but I’ve got more to show and more to learn and more to give! You are inspirational, Charlotte! I’m with you for the long fight ahead! We’ve got this!!!
As I told Mary Trump on her Substack tonight... I'm dipping out to my happy place to read some alt pairing fanfiction stories, but still checking in on the political scene. I have never, and will never, step away from my fellow humans in need.
I spent New Year's night at the local ER as a patient, but I remembered to thank every single provider who stepped into my cubicle. I made sure the EMTs that got me there knew how much I appreciate them. I made sure every nurse I saw in my room got a sincere thanks, along with my appreciation for them and their dedication. I thanked all the test givers, wished everyone a bright, prosperous new year, and did my best to lift spirits. It was all I could do, given the circumstances, but I got it done. Now, off to write a letter to the hospital admin praising all the folks whose names I noted for their fine work. :D
It is always possible to do SOMETHING to lift one's fellow man, even if it is only a kind word or smile. <3
Thanks Charlotte, and your example of Andy Kim is reminiscent of Mr. Roger’s reminder to look for the helpers. When I start moving towards nihilism in my hardest moments, this is what I turn to for inspiration…the many good and decent people who are helping every day.
Amen, and well articulated. I began today with a bit of serendipity while drinking my tea, eating breakfast, listening to an U2 album, and reading my emails I opened up Dan Rather's Steady Substack essay commenting on Biden's WH ceremony and he mentioned Bono. I'm also ending today with more serendipity. After listening to Ruth Ben-Ghiat's (Lucid Substack) Zoom with guest Katherine Stewart (The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism and her forthcoming book Money, Lies, and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy) in which they both talked about reactionary nihilism, I return to my emails to find Charlotte's essay on nihilism. Great minds..... (theirs, not mine).
We’re resting a bit for now, but also focused on the things we can do locally to protect and improve the lives of the folks in our immediate community. I’m also working on things we can do within the farming community that can improve outcomes for the folks raising our food while at the same time creating climate solutions. Trump can’t stop us all.
Yes, Charlotte. Thank you. This is spot on: "Nihilism pretends to be clarity, but really, it’s just a particularly pathetic laziness powered by narcissism."
I stepped back, and rested, and am ready to do what needs to be done for our country. To follow Senator Kim's example and to do what needs to be done to clean up the mess. Thank you for your clarity, and conviction. Now, let's get to work.
I am so proud to have Andy Kim as my senator. And proud to consider you (though we have never met) a friend. Thank you all for being part of my community.
This. I am ready to help do what needs to be done. If our government stops providing needed services we can all work to help our neighbors get what they need. Together, we can do something, no matter how small. Thank you for reminding us all.
Andy Kim was my Representative, and is now my Senator. I’ve met him several times over the past years, and he genuinely represents his constituents. He is such a kind caring man, and should be a role model for all of us as we navigate the upcoming chaos. I know he won’t back down to the felon, and we can’t either. If we lose hope, the evil has won. We must fight for our rights and those of the marginalized communities that have been targeted by the incoming administration.
I am completely with you. The nihilists have no place in a civil society. We have to call them out for who they are no matter what their position in government or the private sector.

How do you do it, my friend? You nail it every time. I’m here for the sermons. I’m here to march on. 🙏
Yes! Thank you for your positive outlook. We need to stay optimistic while fighting like hell.
Good talk, Charlotte!
Charlotte,
I am completely with you. The nihilists have no place in a civil society. We have to call them out for who they are no matter what their position in government or the private sector.
Be safe and watch your six,
Steve Dundas
Excellent. Thanks.
