Gosh, thanks for all this great research and discussion! I remember watching to see if the smoke was white or black when Pope Paul was elected (yes, I am old), and frankly, had forgotten the conclave was underway.
I like the fact that one of the highlighted cardinals is from Malta, although obviously that alone is no reason to select a Pope. I like to picture a world in which Pete Buttigieg wins the 2028 election and then he and the Pope can talk in Maltese during his subsequent visit to the Vatican. Also, in this scenario, the Pope would never have a problem pronouncing the US president's last name. "Buttigieg" is a common last name in Malta.
This is great. I wish I had read it before taking the New York Times conclave quiz yesterday. I got three out of the 10 questions wrong. Disappointing, considering my 12 years of Catholic school.
I have not been a practicing Catholic since I got married many years ago, but I have felt a calling to return throughout the past couple of decades in waves varying in intensity. I have resisted due to issues related to its patriarchy and dogma, but I still feel very drawn to its heart. Your faith is inspirational to me.
I am looking forward to discovering who the new pope will be, and I hope he veers closer to Francis than Benedict XVI.
Trump is already planning for when he is not announced as the next Pope. First he'll claim the election was stolen and he won by over a million votes. Second, he'll declare that he has evidence that the majority of the voters offered no proof of American citizenship and were ineligible to vote. Then he'll say the fact that none of the ballots were retained and in fact were burned before they could be verified, is proof that the election was stolen. Finally, he'll declare that Hillary's server and Hunter Biden's laptop prove he won the election. Desine furtum! (Stop the Steal.")
Thanks for this - watching BBC and speculating no vote today as it is getting later and later. Have also rented We Have a Pope so I wouldn't forget about it.
Thank you, Charlotte, for a thoughtful and clear explanation of the conclave process for your American and not-universally-Catholic audience.

A wonderful, wonderful explanation of something that is very, very complicated. Thank you.
This was a great post...and you must be shocked.
Thank you Charlotte! Fascinating but arcane.
